Tulips

tulip flower

Tulips grow best in areas with cold winters, cool springs, and cool summers. These beautiful flowers come in a number of different sizes, colors, and shapes depending on the variety.

When planting Tulips, look for areas that provide full sun to light shade. Avoid planting near foundations, on step slopes, or in heavy shade. This is because areas near foundations and south facing slopes tend to heat up more quickly than other areas. Tall varieties should be sheltered from strong winds.

Before planting Tulips, loosen the soil to a depth of 12 to 15 inches. Add in 2- to 4-inches of compost and mix in well. Tulips do best in full sun to light shade. Keep tulips watered and in well drained soil. Tall varieties should be sheltered from strong winds.

It is suggested that your garden receives an annual application of compost to keep your plants healthy. After plants are finished flowering in spring, cut back flower stalks but allow the leaves to die back naturally.

Some varieties may need replanting every year while others will spread easily on their own.

How To Grow Tulips in Southern California

To plant Tulips in Southern California you will need to search for varieties that have been pre-selected for this region. The bulbs should be purchased between September and December and approximately 1.5 inches in diameter.

Some of the best varieties to purchase are:

  • Avignon
  • Blue Jay
  • Fiesta
  • Apeldoorn's Elite

After you have purchased your bulbs Freeze them six weeks prior to planting. Freezing your bulbs will ensure that they do not sprout before you plant them.

Bury the tulip bulb approximately 5 inches in rich soil (you can do this by adding a pound of 10-10-10 soil for every 100 square feet). Give the bulbs a generous helping of water after planting. Keep soil moist until leaves form and then begin watering more frequently.
