Caring for Your Palm Trees

When caring for your palm tree there are a number of factors that can help keep your palm tree healthy. We have all seen what neglect can do to almost any plant. To maintain a healthy palm tree it is essential that you understand care instructions so that you can maintain a prosperous palm.

Preparing Your Soil

One of the most important factors in growing a healthy palm tree is soil. The type of soil you have will determine how much nutrients and water your plant will receive. Try mixing in some mycorrhizal fungi to your soil. This can help to increase your palm trees root area by as much as 1,000 percent. The microorganisms that are found in the fungi receives food from the palm tree and in exchange provides nutrients and moisture.

When preparing to plant your palm tree you may want to mix in fertilizer depending on your soil conditions. After planting, use some of the dirt to build a soil barrier around the tree. This will help to keep water from escaping. Next, add about 2-3 inches of mulch around the tree.

After planting a palm tree you will want to water it daily for the first two weeks. Watering should decrease gradually over time until the palm is established. Try to monitor your soil so that it does not dry out. It is recommended that you add furilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium at least twice a year to ensure your palm tree has the nutrients it needs.
